Next weekend we are heading to Fish Lake in Utah for a family reunion. We are soooo excited but I'm a little nervous about the drive. The kids have a hard time driving an hour to Palm Springs. Does any of you have some ideas to keep them busy. I'm open to anything that will help make our trip enjoyable.

Bring a treasure box filled with little toys and activities from the Dollar Tree (or 99 Cent Store out there I guess). Every hour that they are well-behaved, they get a new surprise from the box to play with. It's even better if you can go shopping for the items by yourself and keep the contents of the box a secret from them. That will keep their curiosity up along the way!
My mom used to do this with us on road trips and it worked wonders. I still remember some of the little toys and trinkets I got!
The DVD player is a life saver! Bring lots of movies. That would be my #1 recommendation!!!!
If you can deal with a little stickeyness, dum-dums are great, too.
Make as few stops as possible because if your kids are like Carson, the biggest nightmare is getting them back in the car. So only gas and pee breaks, but no stretch breaks. We don't even let Carson out of the car during those stops, he just gets to roam around in the car (but he's still in diapers, so we can do that). We learned that the hard way!
Some people say travel at night, but Carson will just stay up the whole time (he stayed up till we arrived at midnight in CA once) which is terrible.
We tie stuff to Carson's shirt or car seat with ribbon (toys, sippy cups, binkies, etc.) and it saves a lot of turning around to find stuff for you guys. I know it sounds mean, but don't knock it till you've driven 650 miles alone with a 2 year old and you're having to pull over every exit to find something. Just don't make the ribbon too long and make sure to pay attention that they aren't strangling themselves in the back!
I've started putting a church bag filled with toys and books right next to his seat so he can just reach over and get whatever he wants and that is nice too. Books have been a huge hit on car rides.
We've traveled with Carson so much lately, I feel like I learn something new that works each time, so maybe I'll think of more.
Luciky Fish Lake is only about 6 hours from your house instead of th 8 or 9 it takes to get all the way up to my house. But too bad it's so far from us. I hate that you'll be in Utah and I won't get to see you! We might drive down to CA in August, though!
I wish i was going:( I wouldnt want to be in your car with your kids for that long, hahah jk i will miss everyone!
go to the dollar store and have a goody bag with toys, but give them one or two at a time. or laptop for movies or portable dvd player? sounds fun.
